A Critique of Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, SecondLife and other such social sites
Why does facebook provide you with snippets of conversation your friends are having? Do I really need to know
what is said? This seems like the sort if thing a neurotic, dependent, self-doubting and insecure person would be like.
Is it possible that Facebook is inadvertently fostering these personality traits? will this be an inadvertent outcome
as a personality trait for a large collection of people in the future who grow up with Facebook and other such media
sources?
Why do I need to "see" the posts someone else writes on a friend’s wall? If I needed to know this, they would of told
me right? Seems as though these sites play on peoples insecurities, desires to know things about their acquaintances,
and the attraction of "eavesdropping" on others thoughts, ideas and discussions between their other friends which
they might not have originally been exposed to in the real world. The changes to Facebook recently made make these
issues all the more apparent, I’m seeing comments and discussions from others I have no interest in, nor should I be
privy to really.
Sure, Facebook keeps you in contact, but outside of this useful feature, most of the time we are just observing
discussions we would normally not be privy to, i.e. we are eavesdropping.
Will the use of this sort of communication technology develop people into nosey, short attention spaned individuals
who assume that they have the right to know everything, about everyone’s lives, and become offended when someone
invokes their right to privacy? or maybe in an attempt to fit in we will mould ourselves into people who are all too willing
to give away private information in an attempt to fit in to the world around us?
In a day and age where "sound bites" and quick and simple to understand information is seen as more effective and
important than discussion, analysis and critique it seems facebook is playing to this and providing us with a medium
that does not provoke thought, does not allow for analysis of ideas, or any discussion beyond the normal everyday
interactions we already have when we meet face to face.
Ever noticed how most areas and boxes in facebook that you can write a comment or provide a thought in are limited
to a fixed amount of characters?
Or how almost all the applications and features on facebook aim towards and appeal to immature, vapid, shallow and
non-thought provoking matter? What am I? a 5 year old? Where I play a game, or I feed a virtual fish with the resemblance
to Nemo? There is nothing wrong with tuning out, but when the ONLY thing that is provided to me are avenues to tune
out, and the mediums I use don't provoke any thought in me or others, I start to wonder why.
TV, Internet, Newspapers, Social sites, they are all moving towards more simple, mindless content. In a day and age when
we have a greater general knowledge of the world around us, why is there a push towards dumbing us down, appealing
to the lowest common denominator, and making us retreat to the world of teenagers when we were consumed with
ourselves our worries, and cared about nothing else? The average age of 50% of facebook users is 25 plus, yet the
content on Facebook doesn’t seem suited to such an age group.
It seems that all these mediums we get ourselves involved in (Myspace, Facebook, Twitter and the virtual world called
SecondLife etc) are just other forms created to sell advertising and keep the masses occupied with "irrelevant"
activities. Not to mention, the main social network sites all are aimed towards short, sharp, and quick comments, which
are not akin to discussion, nor are they compatible with the sharing of complex thoughts and ideas, something a 25
year old is extremely capable in doing.
The more we move our lives online, ironically the more we disconnect from society, funnily enough, it might be the social
networking sites that drive this. Join a Church group, Discussion, group, sports team a Club or society, or volunteer
because at the end of the day we all end up enjoying ourselves the most when we experience and challenge the world we
live in...
When was the last time you posted a picture on facebook of a great time you had online?....
